Mrs Shanley's Special Chapel Service

There was a fantastic Chapel Service held yesterday to celebrate Mrs Shanley's 27 years of service at Smallwood/DCPS. Among the guests were 2 of her former headmasters, governors, old friends and pupils.

We wish her luck and thank her again for her dedication and hardwork.

DCPS Parents' Golf Day

We had our second golf parents' day at Denstone College on Friday. The weather was glorious and we had a fantastic round followed by a quick visit to The Tavern. Winners of the competitions were:

Stableford pairs: Tony Forster and Terry Brown
Nearest the pin: Ollie Marsden
Longest drive: Alastair Houston

Many thanks to all those who attended and we hope to repeat the event next year.

Mrs Wason's Cycling Success!

This time last year, I sat and watched the National Masters Track Cycling Championships and thought, "I'd like to have a go at this 'no brakes, no gears ' cycling on a wooden wall!".  Exhilarating! It hooked me. 12 months on, after 2 broken ribs and the various other ailments brought about by a sporting come-back after nearly 10 years of child-rearing and too much prosecco (not at the same time!!), I got to ride against some of the most dedicated women I have ever met!

I am absolutely thrilled with my bronze in the match sprint event, silver in the team sprint event and two new PBs in the 500m time trial and Flying 200m qualifier.  In my age category, the experience and pedigree was high: amongst them world and national champions and I learnt so much about the sport and about myself which I can use in coming competitions and next year's National and World Championships.

It is a growing sport and not nearly as scary as it sounds! If anyone is interested in giving it a go then please do get in touch as we live in easy distance of two fantastic, supportive tracks with sessions for everyone from beginners to world class riders.

Pre-Prep 2's Taste of Spain!

At the end of the Trinity term to compliment their Spanish learning, PP2 had a taste of Spain come to their classroom! After learning about typical Spanish dishes and vocabulary for Spanish foods, during a lesson they tasted various Spanish foods from tortilla española, chorizo, Spanish olives, Manchego cheese and salsa with tortilla chips.  They were able to use "me gusta" and "no me gusta" to tell each other in Spanish which foods they did and didn't like! They were absolutely fabulous, even asking for more vocabulary to express different opinions! I was very impressed with how adventurous they were with tasting the foods and was happy that they enjoyed every morsel of food!

Bien hecho PP2!

Year 4

We are very proud of Year 4 who all achieved their John Muir Discovery Award and were awarded their certificates today. This award represents over 40 hours work. We chose to work in many ways to discover, explore, conserve and share the special wild places around us. Work included teaming up with Peak District national Park Rangers to explore Ilam Hall Estate; creating an exhibition inspired by these experiences and also The Lost Words by Robert McFarlane; replacing and building stiles around our school footpaths alongside East Staffs Ramblers; finally testing out these new stiles on a loop walk from the school grounds. The children have been immersed in the outdoors and had time to reflect on what the outdoors means to them, some examples of these are on our school twitter feed. To quote Isabella-"Go into the wildlife and feel yourself, freedom and more".

Year 5 News

Year 5 have been set a number of online tasks to complete weekly to ensure that skills taught this year are kept fresh and that they are fully prepared for Year 6. The children can access each activity on purplemash.com using their personal log in and the password that they have used all year. We will be sending home a log in reminder in case the children have forgotten. Each week there will be a SPAG/ comprehension activity plus maths games to reinforce times tables.

Year 6

Year 6 made the best use of the hot sun yesterday by doing Pyrography with Miss Bennett. They used magnifying glasses to burn words into soft wood. The results were fantastic and they all get a memento to take home.
