The Wizard of Oz

This term's drama production was a major success. We were blessed with dry weather, so after the audience had enjoyed a picnic tea on the lawn, we decided to perform the first scene outside, with a real dog! Here are some photos of behind-the-scenes, the actors and some of the performance.

Sport's News

U9 Swimming - 27th June 2017 - Denstone Prep v Yarlet School

Denstone Prep win 17 races to 13

On an overcast day the Under 9 swimming team was pleased to dive into the heated outdoor swimming pool of Yarlet School. Denstone Prep captained by Freddie H got off of to a winning start with Darcie and Christian recording wins in the Individual Medleys. This was quickly followed by further wins in the individual backstrokes for Daisy, Darcie, Cleo, Christian and Captain Freddie. The individual butterfly was up next and a 1-2 for Daisy and Isla added more points for Denstone Prep. In the individual breaststroke a 1-2 for Darcie and Phoebe and Freddie and Stan added to the individual win of Christian. Onto the individual front crawl, more wins from Isla and Darcie were added before the team backstroke saw a win for the combination of Isla, swimming 2 lengths, Su Shan and Darcie. The girls recorded their second team win in the team breastroke when Isla, Darcie, Su Shan and Phoebe combined together. A respectable second and third for both the girls and boys team medleys left Denstone Prep in a strong position going into the final front crawl relay. In a close race throughout, Denstone Prep was led off by Captain Freddie, before lengths from Cleo, Billy, Daisy, Stan, Darcie, Oscar, Christian, Su Shan, Matthew, Phoebe, Belle, Richard and finally Isla brought home the final win of the gala for Denstone Prep.

Rounders Match Report - 5th July 2017

Denstone Prep Under 11's:14 – St Bede's Under 11's: 7

The Under 11 rounders team had a victorious end to their sporting life at Denstone College Prep School with a sublime 14 – 7 victory over St Bede's.

Captain Tyra won the toss and put St Bede's into bat but a combination of Lola as bowler bowling to Amelia at backstop who caught and threw to Amber at first post saw the St Bede's batters stumped out time and time again. Further outstanding fielding from Sophie T at second post saw further St Bede's batters stumped at 2nd and excellent work from a combination of Faith, Celeste, Sophie H, Lexie and Pippa saw either batters run out at 3rd and 4th posts or limited to only half rounders.

Denstone College Prep then took up the batting. A combination of Georgina batting and Jess running saw the first ½ rounder scored and from there the runs kept coming. A further ½ rounder from Jess and Georgina along with scores from Lola (2½); Lexie (2); Amber (1); Sophie H (1); Amelia (2); Celeste (½); Faith (1); Sophie T (½); and Imogen ( ½) and 2 rounders from no balls gave the Under 11 girls a final  victory in their last ever match as Year 6 girls at Denstone College Prep School.

To finish off their rounders season, the girls played a much more friendly version of the game with both teams mixed together as Denstone Prep and St Bede's took on Denstone Prep and St Bede's! This game was a much closer result with a narrow 12 – 10 victory to Denstone Prep and St Bede's playing against Denstone Prep and St Bede's. The girls of Lola (2), Amelia; (½); Georgina B (1½); Sophie T (2½); Lexie (½); and Amber (½) joined together along with St Bedes players who scored 4½ rounders between them to narrowly defeat the team of Celeste (1); Pippa (1); Sophie H (2½); Imogen; Tyra (½); Jess and Faith (½) and their St Bede's team mates.

This was a fitting end to the Under 11 girls sporting careers who have all represented themselves and the school so well on so many occasions. You’ll be missed girls but Denstone College Prep Schoo'ls loss is very much Denstone College's gain!

Girl of the Game: The entire team for their such wonderful attitude and teamwork and the glorious years of sport they have provided to Smallwood Manor/Denstone College Preparatory School.

Smallwood Explorer v Smallwood Staff Tennis Match

In the battle of Smallwood Explorer versus Smallwood Staff, Jake W from year 6 took on Miss Bennett in a Smallwood Explorers tennis match. At a previous Smallwood Explorers Holiday Club Jake observed Miss Bennett’s ‘extraordinary’ tennis skills (she was simply lulling him into a false sense of  security) and a tennis challenge was born.

In the final week of term, we were finally able to play the match in a best of one set shoot-out.

With the support from the rest of year 6, Jake and Miss Bennett took to the Court. Miss Bennett served first and hit her first ace of the game from her very first serve! The first game was a bit topsy-turvy before it was finally won by Miss Bennett to take an early 1-0 lead. A further five games followed like the first and despite Jake mounting a fightback in the fifth and sixth games, victory was finally sealed 6-0.

It was then time for Jakes forfeit. As an avid London Wasps Fan what could be worse than having to wear a Leicester Tigers shirt?? Wearing 2 Leicester Tigers shirts and an Arsenal shirt of course! (Had Miss Bennett lost she was going to have to wear a Stoke City shirt – traumatising beyond belief though a very apt shirt for a loser....some would say!)

Jake took his loss and forfeit in immense spirit, wonderful maturity and extremely good graciousness. Whilst the sport was fun, it could have been very different had Jake been able to take opportunity of some poor serves from Miss Bennett. What was more clear though is what a thoroughly decent young man Jake has grown into with his honour, decency and spirit. We very much hope to see Jake in the future at Smallwood Explorers continuing to set a fine example to his peers that he has throughout the past.

In the meantime, should you wish to set a challenge for Miss Bennett or any other Smallwood Explorer staff member, please feel free to contact Mrs Wilson or Mrs Griffith for details of the Smallwood Explorers Holiday Club.
